(Huntsville, Ala.) Throughout the holiday season, many local families may need additional help to get food on the table. As a way of fulfilling its mission to give back to the local community, the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Integration Center (AMIIC) will be opening its doors to accept food and financial donations throughout the month of December.
AMIIC has partnered with One Generation Away (OneGenAway), a Franklin, TN-based nonprofit organization that collects quality surplus food and redistributes it to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity throughout North Alabama, Middle Tennessee, and the Florida Panhandle area.
The AMIIC facility will serve as a collection point for the organization, accepting nonexpired food and financial donations. Donations can be dropped off at 5021 Technology Drive, Suite E in Cummings Research Park on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“Food plays such a huge role in our holiday celebrations as families, friends, and communities gather together in celebration. We are honored to come alongside families experiencing food insecurity during this time to offer food and hope when their supply is low,” said Chris Whitney, founder and CEO of OneGenAway.
Whitney added that this is not just a job for OneGenAway, but a community effort. “If you are able to donate food, your time, or your money this December, your impact will be felt by your neighbors in times of need.”
AMIIC Executive Director John Schmitt expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate, noting that AMIIC was founded with the mission of helping to build North Alabama’s workforce of tomorrow and that food insecurity presents significant challenges that can act as barriers to participation in the modernized workforce.
“We don’t want to limit our focus at AMIIC to just the technology, so by partnering with an organization like One Generation Away that has been doing some tremendous work in local communities, we saw that as a way we can continue to serve and support Alabama.”
The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Integration Center (AMIIC) was established to accelerate the adoption of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and build the Northern Alabama workforce of tomorrow. AMIIC will work to stimulate Alabama’s economy, workforce, and advanced manufacturing sector through its state-of-the-art demonstration facility and a significant expansion of education and workforce development programs available to both students and workers. Based in Huntsville, Ala., AMIIC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM).
